Coccydynia

what is this condition

Inflammation of the coccyx (the tailbone located deep between the buttocks just above the anus) and its surrounding area. The coccyx is often refered to as the “sitting bone” and coccydynia is associated with pain and tenderness of the area that worsens on sitting.

what causes this condition

An injury or trauma to the coccyx or pelvic bones may initiate inflammation of the coccyx, but it may occur seemingly spontaneously.

how it may feel if I have this condition

Exquisite Pain and local tenderness that occur at the tailbone area are the major symptoms of coccydynia. It typically leads to difficulty sitting or leaning against the buttocks..

what is the treatment

Patients with coccydynia are advised to use a well-padded seat when sitting and avoid long periods of sitting when possible. Anti-inflammatory and pain medications can help relieve symptoms at early stages. If the condition exceeds one month it may become more severe or persistently troublesome and even resistant to medication, then a consult should be sought.

At ECC, treatment persistent coccydynia involves local steroid injections. This corticosteroid shot is simply performed at the office and dramatically relieves chronic pain and even resolves the symptoms for many. Sometimes, a fluoroscopy guided injection is required under local anesthesia includes. Physical therapy with exercises can be helpful with a patient’s recovery.
